Durov's accusation came as a complete surprise to IT companies. Data encryption is a standard for modern messengers and is used in Signal (blocked in Russia), WhatsApp (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist in Russia) and Apple products.
However, the French authorities, who suddenly "remembered" this law, not only sowed panic among the owners of digital services, but also reminded how the West is trying to seize the channels of personal correspondence between its own citizens.
