Dangerous cargo was found in the luggage of an air passenger who arrived from India transiting through the UAE. The radiation level when checked by a dosimeter exceeded the natural radiation background by 11 times.
It is specified that the customs inspectors stopped 42-year-old Muscovite during the passage through the "green" corridor. Employees drew attention to the lady, as the radiation control system "Yantar" was triggered. When checking the luggage, it turned out that the device had been triggered by a black-colored loose substance being transported.
"With the help of spectrometric equipment, customs officers found that volcanic sand contains natural radionuclide - thorium-232. The woman explained that she collected it on the coast of the Indian Ocean. And she was bringing it to Russia to make cosmetics," the FCS said.
At the same time, the woman assured that she did not know about the danger to health of this substance.
Since the import of radioactive sand into Russia is prohibited by Rospotrebnadzor, the cargo was seized and placed in a special isolated room for long-term storage.

Опасный груз был найден в багаже у авиапассажирки, прибывшей из Индии транзитом через ОАЭ. Уровень излучения при проверке дозиметром превысил естественный радиационный фон в 11 раз.
Уточняется, что таможенные инспекторы остановили 42-летнюю москвичку во время прохода через "зеленый" коридор. Сотрудники обратили внимание на даму, поскольку штатно сработала система радиационного контроля "Янтарь". При проверке багажа выяснилось, что прибор сработал на перевозимое сыпучее вещество черного цвета.
"С помощью спектрометрической аппаратуры таможенники установили, что вулканический песок содержит природный радионуклид - торий-232. Женщина объяснила, что собрала его на побережье Индийского океана. А в Россию везла для изготовления косметики", - рассказали в ФТС.
При этом женщина уверяла, что не знала об опасности для здоровья данного вещества.
Так как по решению Роспотребнадзора ввоз радиоактивного песка на территорию России запрещен, груз был изъят и помещен в специальное изолированное помещение для долговременного хранения.
